Postal service urged to issue Purple Heart Forever stamp
On July 11, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., led a bipartisan effort to encourage the U.S. Postal Service to issue a Purple Heart Forever Stamp to permanently honor U.S. military members wounded or killed in combat. Clinton and King were joined by 12 senators and 80 representatives in sending a letter to the USPS' Citizens' Stamp Advisory Council, requesting the "forever" stamp.
Legion tells Congress: 2009 VA budget needs more funding
Last week, the president's budget request for fiscal 2009 reached Capitol Hill. The American Legion testified before both the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committees, expressing concern over several areas of funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs. The total budget request called for just over a $2 billion increase over the recently passed fiscal 2008 funding level.
The American Legion identified several factors that may affect several areas of the VA budget in fiscal 2009:
- Normal inflation within VA's budget is estimated to be about $1.5 billion;

American Legion policy regarding attorney referrals
As mandated by Public Law 109-461, effective June 20, 2007, attorneys are now permitted to represent veterans for a fee before the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) after a notice of disagreement (NOD) is filed with the agency of original jurisdiction.
